Phalen Park
Bridge L8560 was constructed in 1910 in Phalen Park to carry vehicular traffic over a canal in the “Aquatic Park”. The bridge was designed by C.A.P. Turner, a notable bridge engineer who designed the Mendota Bridge in the Twin Cities, and also re-designed Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge from a transporter bridge to a lift bridge.
Currently, Bridge L8560 carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic as a result of a roadway re-alignment in the park. The bridge is an open-spandrel barrel arch bridge with a limestone facade that was added in the 1930′s as a Civil Works Project. The bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Almost a century old, the bridge requires restoration and rehabilitation. Olson & Nesvold Engineers is the leading consultant team that designed the rehabilitation of the bridge and maintains its historic significance.
The bridge will receive a new concrete deck, railings that meet modern safety requirements, a new limestone facade and also a set of precast arch liner panels for supplemental structural integrity and safety for the canoeists.
O.N.E. developed a unique construction sequence to ensure that the design work was feasible and constructable. The following video clip displays the sequence of construction of this historic rehabilitation.
